Membership of the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health

The British Fellowship in Pediatrics, offered by the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health (RCPCH), is a crucial component of postgraduate training for pediatric doctors. It awards a Diploma in Child Health (DCH) and is obtained by many doctors. It has been approved by the General Medical Council (GMC) as meeting the required standards and is informed by the latest research and evidence.

Membership of the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health – MRCPCh

The British Pediatric Fellowship, also known as the Royal College of Pediatrics and Child Health (RCPCH), is an essential element in the postgraduate training of pediatricians. Doctors receive a Diploma in Child Health (DCH) through this program.

The importance of MRCPCH fellowship :

Qualification for work in England and Gulf countries with an IELTS or OET certificate.

Equivalency in Egypt as a master’s degree (thesis defense required).

Acquisition of scientific knowledge, experience, skills, and expertise.

Structure of MRCPch Exams:

Candidates typically undergo the three theoretical exams on a computer at a testing center. The theoretical exams can be taken in any order and are non-sequential.

Candidates must pass the three theoretical exams before they can proceed to take the MRCPCH clinical exam.

Exam Components:

The examination comprises two parts: the theoretical and practical sections.

Pediatric trainees in the United Kingdom are required to take these exams as part of their training.

Pediatricians worldwide increasingly take the MRCPCH exam to demonstrate their practice standards or as part of their local training.

Training Period:

The exam is administered during the core specialty training period.

This training period typically spans two to three years in the United Kingdom.

It has replaced the Royal College of Physicians’ Membership exam for Pediatrics (MRCP) since June 1999.

It is a written exam that assesses fundamental clinical knowledge in pediatrics.

It aims to ensure you have reached the standard of someone entering core specialist training. It is part of both the MRCPCH and Diploma of Child Health (DCH) exams.

Exam time:
2 hours 30 minutes.

Exam Format:
The questions are typically a combination of:
SBAs – 79 questions
EMQs – 6 questions (3 statements or clinical scenarios in each)

Exam Fees:
The fees are the same for both delivery options: test center and online invigilation.

TAS

Theory and Science (TAS) Exam assesses basic scientific, physiological, and pharmacological principles of clinical practice, and of evidence-based practice.

Exam time:
2 hours 30 minutes, and candidates can apply to take FOP and TAS on the same day; FOP is always in the morning and TAS in the afternoon.

Exam Format:
The questions are typically a combination of:
SBAs – 70 questions
EMQs – 10 questions.

Exam Fees:
The fees are the same for both delivery options: test center and online invigilation.

AKP

Applied Knowledge in Practice (AKP)

assess your knowledge, understanding, and clinical decision-making abilities based on a standard of someone entering their core specialist training and are part of the MRCPCH exam.

Exam Time:

This exam is 2 parts, each of which is 2 hours 30 minutes and you will take them on the same day.

Exam Format:
The questions types is a combination of:
N of many, EMQs, photographic material, data interpretation, and case histories. It used to be called MRCPCH Part 2.

N of many:
This is similar to SBA, However, two or three answers are required from a longer list, It is only used in the AKP exam.

Clinical Exam

MRCPCH Clinical is the Last Exam of the MRCPCH (membership exam).
this exam will assess whether you have reached the standard in clinical skills expected of a specialized doctor., and will assess your skills in Child development, communication skills, history taking, management planning, recognition and symptoms, and diagnosis of clinical signs and physical examination skills

Exam Format:
It consists of ten stations
1-4 Clinical
5 Development
6 History
7 and 8 Communication
9 and 10 Video

The first three exams must be passed before progressing to the final/Clinical exam.

Entry Exam requirements :

  • you must have passed all three Exams
  • completed a period of training lasting two and a half years from the graduation date on your diploma of medical qualification (recommended).
  • must be proposed by one sponsor.
